Time Inc. Wins Labor Dispute With Guild

Aug 15, 2016

(NEW YORK, NY August 15, 2016) — Time Inc. (NYSE:TIME) has won its Labor Dispute with the Newspaper Guild of New York CWA, LOCAL 31003 (known as the NewsGuild). On Friday, August 11, 2016, Administrative Law Judge Raymond P. Green ruled that the company was within its rights to declare an impasse and impose its last, best and final offer back in November 2014.

In a 49-page opinion Judge Green placed the blame squarely on the Guild describing how the Guild adopted a defensive strategy “to stretch out the negotiations for as long as possible in order to preclude the company from effectuating any changes in the terms and conditions of employment.”

Those changes, explained Greg Giangrande, Time Inc. EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer, “are integral to the company’s transformation in today’s dynamic media climate. Our proposals were developed with an eye towards what is best for all company stakeholders. The Guild’s strategy failed to take into account that the future of the 200 employees they represent is necessarily dependent on the success of the enterprise as a whole.”

As a result of this decision, the employees represented by the Guild continue to be governed by the expired collective bargaining agreement as modified by the last, best and final offer.
