Time Inc.’s Extra Crispy Names Scott Gold Bacon Critic

Gold to Name “Best Bacon in the United States” at the End of Three-Month Tenure

Aug 1, 2016

NEW YORK, NY (August 1, 2016) — Time Inc.’s (NYSE:TIME) Extra Crispy announced today the appointment of Scott Gold, a New Orleans-based food and drink writer and author of The Shameless Carnivore: A Manifesto for Meat Lovers, as its first-ever Bacon Critic. Gold was chosen from more than a thousand applicants who submitted essays to Extra’s Crispy editors during a national search that was held when the site launched in June.

During his three-month appointment, which will run from September to November, Gold will spearhead Extra Crispy’s bacon coverage, producing features, short dispatches, bacon reviews and bacon-related news posts. He’ll travel nationally and internationally seeking out bacon experiences to share with Extra Crispy’s breakfast-obsessed audience, and at the end of his tenure Gold will name the “Best Bacon in the United States.”

“We were looking for a meat-obsessed journalist with a unique writing voice and jones for adventure, and Scott is exactly that,” said Extra Crispy Site Director Ryan Grim. “The man wrote a book about eating almost every kind of meat on the planet, so there’s no question he’s qualified. Scott’s hilarious and full of bacon knowledge and Louisiana charm. He’s going to absolutely slay as Bacon Critic.”

Gold has contributed to print and online publications, including Gourmet, Edible Brooklyn, Thrillist, Eater, Tasting Table, Time Out and OffBeat. He was a feature food writer and photographer for The New Orleans Advocate, restaurant critic and dining writer for Gambit and resident Food Pornographer for the New Orleans arts and culture website NolaVie.com. Gold is a frequent contributor to “Louisiana Eats!” with Poppy Tooker and a monthly correspondent for NolaVie on WWNO’s “All Things New Orleans.”

Gold added, "It's difficult to understate how excited and humbled I am to take on the mantle of Bacon Critic for Extra Crispy, which is nothing short of a dream job. Three months of eating and writing about bacon—and being paid for it? It doesn’t get much better than that. As an avid and adventurous eater and a passionate food writer, I promise to treat the assignment with all the professionalism and justice this vaunted position deserves and, I promise, a healthy forkful of glee. Because this is bacon, after all. What could be more joyful?"

Gold will officially kick off his tenure as Bacon Critic at Extra Crispy’s The BreakFestival, a two-day event celebrating all things breakfast taking place in New York City during Labor Day weekend. Click here to purchase tickets to the event.
