Time Inc. To Open State of the Art Food Studios in Birmingham, Alabama

Jul 13, 2015

New York, NY (July 13, 2015) – Today, Time Inc. announced a major investment in food content creation, unveiling a plan to build state of the art food studios at its existing Birmingham, Alabama location. The approximately 40,000 square-foot facility will open in January 2016 and will include 28 test kitchens, 12 photo studios, a showcase kitchen, a video studio, a private dining room, an outdoor grilling area and more.

The new Food Studios in Birmingham will serve as Time Inc.’s central resource for the creation of world-class recipes and food photography. The facility will employ a team of 45 Time Inc. staff photographers, stylists, test-kitchen professionals, editors and videographers. Together, they will create dynamic food content for a range of diverse tastes and aesthetics across the Time Inc. portfolio of print and digital brands including Southern Living, Cooking Light, Food & Wine, Real Simple, People, InStyle, Health, Essence, Coastal Living, All You, MyRecipes.com, Sunset and Time Inc. Books.

In addition, the Food Studios will host cooking demos and interviews with guest chefs and food personalities as well as private dinners, cooking classes and other branded events. The versatile space will also allow Time Inc. to explore new revenue opportunities in native advertising, custom content and live events with advertisers and other partners.

“This major investment in our Birmingham offices gives us the opportunity to develop and shoot the high-quality recipes that our consumers love in state-of-the-art test kitchens with some of the most talented chefs, stylists and photographers working today,” said Evelyn Webster, Executive Vice President, Time Inc.

“Food is one of our most important areas of content creation,” said Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer, Time Inc. “At this new facility, we’ll be working closely with each of our brands to deliver recipes, videos and images that speak to their unique audiences and tastes—and that will be made available on all publishing platforms.”

In addition to the new Food Studios in Birmingham, Time Inc. announced plans to develop three food studios in New York City at 225 Liberty Street and a test kitchen in Oakland, CA at 55 Harrison Street in Jack London Square, the new home of Sunset. The New York facility will include kitchens in a state of the art video studio and two photo studios, where Time Inc. brands will develop and test recipes, shoot daily content and host chef demos and sponsor dinners.

A Director will be named to run the Food Studios in Birmingham, and Time Inc. announced today that it is seeking creative talent to fill that role and 44 other open positions there.

The Time Inc. Food Studios are being developed with assistance from KPS Group for architecture and interior design and Rives Construction Company for construction management, both of Birmingham, Alabama.
