Amateur Photographer Celebrates 130th Anniversary

Oct 7, 2014

LONDON, October 7, 2014 – Amateur Photographer, the world’s oldest weekly photographic magazine, this week marks its 130th birthday with a special anniversary issue, on sale 7 October.

To celebrate its 130th year, the magazine is publishing a bumper 108-page issue, featuring anniversary-themed content. Since the first issue, 6,600 covers have been published and in this edition a cover for each year is showcased in a gallery showing the changing face of the magazine. From the magazine’s archives, some of the first adverts to appear in the magazine are displayed in the first of a nostalgic three-part feature, reflecting on how photography products have been advertised over the years. Britain’s top 130 locations for taking photographs are also revealed in the issue, as selected by readers, professional photographers and the editorial team.

Amateur Photographer has documented in its pages some of the most major innovations in photography. Renowned photography author, Roger Hicks, has contributed to this edition an article taking readers through 130 years of photography, the defining cameras, photographers and historic events, all of which the magazine has been witness to.

The anniversary issue also comes with a complimentary 24-page supplement sharing 130 photography tips for all aspects of photography, from taking landscape images to wildlife shots, through to cleaning and maintenance.

A competition running in the birthday edition allows readers to take part in the celebrations by entering to win a Leica M camera along with a Leica Summarit-M 50mm f/2.5 lens, a prize with a total worth of £6,300. Amateur Photographer has also teamed up with some of the world’s leading photographers, such as Gered Mankowitz, Art Wolfe and Steve McCurry, to offer readers the chance to win one of 130 signed limited-edition prints. The competition is in association with the NSPCC, which is also 130 this year, to help raise funds for the charity. The competition is unveiled in this week’s issue and will be available to enter from 18 October to 31 December.

Nigel Atherton, editor, Amateur Photographer, says: “Amateur Photographer is one of the most respected photography magazines in the world, consistently delivering authoritative editorial and trusted equipment tests. Photography has changed dramatically over the past 130 years and the magazine has been at the forefront of reporting on these developments. I am proud to be able to edit this issue on such a special occasion.”

The first issue of Amateur Photographer was published on the 10th October 1884 and has established itself as the world’s number one weekly photography magazine. Some of the most renowned photographers, such as Alfred Stieglitz, Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, David Bailey and Bob Carlos Clarke have written for the magazine over the years.

The anniversary issue of Amateur Photographer is priced at £2.95 and will be on newsstands and available to download from 7 October.
