Cagle Also Appointed Editorial Director of Entertainment Weekly

Jan 10, 2014

New York, January 10, 2014 – Time Inc. has named Jess Cagle Editor of PEOPLE and Editorial Director of Entertainment Weekly. Cagle will also oversee the editorial team of PEOPLE.com. A new Editor of Entertainment Weekly, who will report directly to Cagle, will be named shortly. Larry Hackett, Editor of PEOPLE since 2006, will be leaving the company. The announcement was made today by David Geithner, Executive Vice President, Time Inc. and Norman Pearlstine, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, Time Inc. Cagle will continue to report to Geithner, with a dotted line to Pearlstine.

“Jess’s reputation for successful collaboration and strong leadership, coupled with his unmatched access and influence in the celebrity world, will benefit both the PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly brands enormously as they continue to dominate their categories,” said Geithner.

“This new structure under Jess will bring seamless integration between our print and digital teams, help create a clear brand vision for the future and ensure we make the most of our opportunities for collaboration,” said Pearlstine. “I want to thank Larry for his years of leadership and recognize his innumerable accomplishments during his 15-year tenure at Time Inc. His commitment to respected journalism, creative insights, and brand acumen have revitalized and stabilized PEOPLE during a time of unprecedented competition. We are grateful for his editorial vision, contributions to PEOPLE’s business efforts, and collegial leadership.”

“It feels amazing to be back at PEOPLE, where I started my career as an intern. PEOPLE and EW are two of the greatest brands in media, and the opportunities for both are endless. I know how excited and committed Time Inc. is to seeing our brands grow and evolve, and being asked to lead these editorial teams is an incredible honor,” said Cagle.

Jess Cagle was named Editor of Entertainment Weekly in 2009. Under his leadership, the brand integrated its print and digital editorial operations, transformed EW.com into a 24/7 breaking news site, and increased its audience and presence in Hollywood—resulting in double-digit growth in 2013. Cagle is one of the country’s most recognizable entertainment journalists. His frequent television appearances include co-hosting the official ABC Academy Awards red carpet pre-show four times in the past five years and serving as a regular contributor to CBS News.

Cagle began his illustrious 27-year career at Time Inc. as a reporter for PEOPLE in 1987. In 1990 he helped launch Entertainment Weekly, where he played a key role in defining the magazine’s voice as a writer and editor for 10 years. He covered the entertainment industry as a Senior Editor of TIME from 2000-2002, then returned to PEOPLE as Entertainment Editor, where he broke some of the brand’s biggest celebrity stories.

It was also announced that Mark Golin, Group Editor of Time Inc.’s Style & Entertainment Group, will be leaving the company. Golin played a leading role in Time Inc.’s digital development since he joined the company from AOL nearly 11 years ago. As Editor of PEOPLE.com, Golin engineered the site’s rapid growth and expansion across mobile, video, and social platforms, ultimately building one of Time Inc.’s most successful digital businesses. He will remain at Time Inc. during a transition period as the company continues to integrate print and digital editorial efforts.
