Oct 12, 2016

(NEW YORK, NY, October 12, 2016)—Empowerment takes center stage at Time Inc.’s fifth annual Festival People en Español (October 15–16 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City). People en Español will host in-depth conversations and engaging activities to address empowerment—a central theme of the event’s mainstage programming—for the Latino community. The festival is presented in conjunction with Festival partners Disney, Macy’s, Voto Latino and CNN en Español.

On Saturday, October 15, the creative team behind Disney's “Elena of Avalor” will participate in a panel discussion about bringing Elena to life on-screen and at Disney Parks. In addition, Latin Grammy-winning artist and series theme song vocalist Gaby Moreno will perform songs from the series, and Princess Elena of Avalor, the first Disney princess to be included on People en Español’s prestigious annual “25 Most Powerful Women” list, will make an appearance. Disney will also host screenings of the upcoming special Dia de los Muertos-themed episode of "Elena of Avalor," as well as the upcoming animated film “Moana” in the Festival Theater space on Saturday and Sunday.

Macy’s will present two panels on women’s empowerment at the Festival Theater, both moderated by People en Español Fashion and Beauty Director Ursula Carranza, with opening remarks from Dineen Garcia, Vice President of Diversity Strategies, Macy’s. On Saturday, October 15, TV personality and philanthropist Laura Posada, entrepreneur and philanthropist Nina Vaca and actress and TV host Adamari López will discuss the impact of empowerment in their careers, advocating for other Latinas and the Hispanic community and Latin culture’s influences on their success. On Sunday, October 16, Nina Vaca will return to discuss these topics with Sylvia Acevedo, Interim CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA.

People en Español will also use the festival as a platform to energize the Hispanic community and galvanize civic engagement and voting awareness during a crucial election year by teaming up with CNN en Español and with Voto Latino, an organization that empowers American Latino millennials by engaging them through civic media. In addition to its anchors participating in the event, CNN en Español will engage with festival attendees from its news truck, encouraging voter participation. Voto Latino will co-host a panel discussion—titled “Making our Vote Count”—on Sunday, October 16. The panel will focus on the importance of voting and of having one’s voice heard, particularly for young Latinos, during this year’s general election. Actress, singer and TV personality Adrienne Bailon, TV host William Valdés, and actor Wilmer Valderrama will participate in the discussion, which will be moderated by CNN en Español correspondent Juan Carlos López.

These empowerment-focused panels are part of the many exciting musical performances, interactive panel discussions, celebrity meet-and-greets and more that make up Festival, the two-day, free and open-to-the-public event that culminates Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s festival theme is “ịÚnete a Nosotros!” with programming featuring a star-studded list of recently announced entertainers, leaders and influencers, including Daddy Yankee, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dascha Polanco, Adrienne Bailon, Selenis Leyva, Alex Sensation, Messiah El Artista, Galilea Montijo, Maite Perroni and more.
